I am very grateful for the opportunity to meet Akiko.  Her presentation was very well done and insightful, as well as informative and relative.

It is always nice to meet someone who is just one or two steps ahead of me and is doing something they love with the skills they have learned in school and the experience they have gained in the workplace.  It give students, especially seniors like me, hope for an exciting and rewarding career.

Since Akiko’s presentation, I have had several conversations about the importance of design, content, and functionality of websites.  All three of these things, in my opinion, are equally as important as the next.

I am a communicator, I love expression through the written word.  I also understand the importance of content – content is king.  I do believe, however, that a lack of effective design directly relates to the effectiveness of the content.

If a website is ugly, unorganized, and difficult to navigate, audiences will not be attracted to reading the content.  You could have the most interesting, well written, and enticing content ever created, but without a proper design plan, it is less likely that the viewer will search around and click through until they find what they want.

A UX designer’s job because critical at this point.  They have to understand and implement user-friendly functions that bring the reader to the appropriate content.

There are over 700 million active websites on the internet, and that number continues to grow everyday.  So many of these websites have yet to master the trifecta of effective content, design, and functionality.  But, when they do, it can really impact the success of the organization.

As I continue to search for an appropriate, exciting, and rewarding internship experience, I spend a great deal of time researching organizations and industries that I am interested in.

As I have stated before, I am currently attracted to the collaboration of traditional communication and digital media.  This article, from Business2community, explores six social media trends to look out for in 2014.

Businesses are catching on to the effectiveness of digital communication and the means in which to attract consumers.  This is only going to continue and evolve; these six trends are just the tip of the iceberg.

It is fascinating to watch technology constantly revolutionize itself and the market.  The internet is a breeding ground of new ideas, ways, and means of engaging consumers.  These kinds of trends affect the success of the communications industry.  Professionals have to be current and willing to keep up with changes, as well as understanding how to use these changes effectively.

Critically watching successful (and terrible) campaigns unfold as a result of digital and social media has been a large part of my curriculum this semester.  I find it very interesting, will continue to explore, and hope to one day (very soon) work on one of these successful projects.

For this weeks post, I did not find an interesting article, instead I am going to describe the beginning stages of my internship search process.

Next semester will be my last.  Therefore, it is time for me to complete an internship for credit.  I could have done my internship for credit earlier in my college career, but my goal is to land an internship in the spring that will lead me to a job post graduation.

I have done one internship already.  It was not for credit, it was for personal work experience.  I was a Business Development Intern for an IT company over the summer.  I really enjoyed my time there and I found the whole experience to be very beneficial.

Now it is time to start looking for my next internship.  I have updated my resume (more than a few times) and had it looked over by several different people.  I took advantage of the accessibility of the Hofstra Career Center and had them critique my resume as well.

Now that my resume is ready, it is time to revise my cover letter and get my name out there.  I have been researching interesting PR internships that I think I will enjoy and I plan to send my resume out between tomorrow and Tuesday.

I do not, at this time, have any specific fields or organizations in mind.  I am open to anything- whether it be in house or agency, fashion or political.  The point of internships is experience, and I am ready to experience it all.

Hopefully, I land somewhere that I really like and they offer me a job upon graduation.  But that’s not till the end, and I have to find one first!

Qylur, a Palo Alto based startup company, is changing the way TSA works.  In fact, with Qylur’s newest technology eliminates the need for TSA.  Qylur has introduced airports to a self-check security system.

This new innovation just once again proves how much our society is advancing technologically.  We are replacing humans with robots where ever we can.

Airport security, though, is something that I think still needs humans to do the job.  Airport security is no joke and flying safety should always be first priority.  I find it hard to believe that a robot can detect a suspicious person as well as another human can.  Humans can read body language and understand signs of a threat before a machine can.  Machines can only detect suspicious things that they have been programmed to detect.

We are currently having the artificial intelligence debate in my philosophy class, and it is really interesting.  It makes you wonder whether robots and machines will ever actually be so advanced that they can be considered intelligent.

But with the way our technology is advancing, who really knows…

Last Tuesday evening Net Power & Light, a San Francisco based company that creates apps for education, launched their new app called Spin.  “Spin brings you a brand new way to have fun together that’s so true to life, you’ll forget the distance and devices between you.”  This free app revolutionizes the way we connect with peers all around the world.

The video chat function is better than ever, “no drag, no lag, no break up in the moment”.  According to this article from the Wall Street Journal, Spin allows you to video chat with up to 10 people at a time.

The interesting thing about Spin is that while you’re conducting your virtual hangouts, users can share pictures, videos and other types of media with each other without losing connection or exiting the video chat screen.

Spin also includes a zoom in and out feature, where you can choose how interactive your screen is.  You can zoom in on one person, perhaps the person that is speaking, or zoom out to see everyone in your chat live at the same time.

In a world where media spreads like wildfire, and users ultimately want to see their stuff “go viral”, Spin offers another way to share with ease.

Everyone likes to video chat; it serves many purposes.  Meetings, informational sessions, lectures, and good old fashion conversations with friends from around the world are made possible through video chat.

Technology evolves everyday.  With these rapid changes, we expect the evolution of web design.  The 2013  web design trends as listed here things The New Design Web have laid out for consumers to be aware of and on the look out for.  2013 is nearing it’s end, and I think we have seen many of these trends come to life right before our eyes and in our hands.

My educational interest in media design has just begun.  This is the first design class I have taken and I am learning how much of this side of the industry I enjoy.  My main educational focus through college has been PR.  In PR, we are the controllers of content.  That is what I like to do.  I like to write and create content for everyone to see.

This list from New Design Web talks about content as a trend- but not a new trend- a trend that will always rule.  “King Content” as the author rightfully names it, is the number one priority all web designers need to keep in mind.  “Without content, there is no website.”

It seems that people tend to confuse the connotative and denotative principles of new media and social media.  To shed light on these discrepancies, Brian Solis, a new media expert, posted this interview conducted by Israel’s BuzzInNews.


Lately, it seems the term “New Media” is popping up everywhere.  We hear it in our classes, on the news, on the internet.  But what exactly does it mean?

We are in an age of grand technological advances – and we are still at the very beginning stages of these developments.  New media is a term for how this technological shift is affecting the media culture.

As a very simple example, print publications of newspapers and magazines are becoming obsolete, and everything is moving onto the World Wide Web.

Social media, as Solis explains, is “a chapter in the ongoing story of new media”.  Social media is a portion, and possibly even a result, of this era of new media.

As a PR student I am very aware of the shifts between “old” and “new” media, and I am constantly being challenged in understanding the difference, and blending the two.  Crossover and integration are happening, and as a student- especially students of this generation, I am expected to have a wide scope of knowledge on all of the ‘medias’ out there today.
